How to Own and Love Wire Jewellery

In my eyes, wire jewellery wrapped and finished properly is beautiful!
And looked after properly, as with any quality piece of jewellery, it will last and continue to look beautiful for years. However just the word 'wire' tells you it's not a soldered and robust single piece of metal. There are a couple of basic things you will need to consider and I do my best to help you look after it. Ultimately please use your common sense.
CARING FOR YOUR WIRE JEWELLERY
Don't sleep in it!
As robust as I make my jewellery (I have a special hammer and tumbler that hardens the wire - I really do put the jewellery through it's paces, and I wont sell anything that I wouldn't or couldn't wear), some of the wire I can use is extremely fine and needs a little consideration.
Smaller, simpler or more classical, tightly woven designs will generally be more robust.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it's probably a duck. In other words, if it looks delicate, it is likely to be, so please treat it with a little more care. And please use your common sense.
Avoid showering/bathing in it!
Your jewellery may have been oxidised (given a patina) and polished and highlighted in places to enhance the effect. Washing with soap/shower gel or exposure to chemicals (chlorine for example) can remove that patina and spoil the effect that you fell in love with in the first place . Some stones are also more porous than others and can be susceptible to water and heat damage. It's not worth the risk.
Avoid constant exposure to sunlight
There are some stones that are sensitive to sunlight and may fade.
Use your polishing cloth!
I do see people wearing handmade wire jewellery and they forget or are unsure about using the polishing cloth they have been provided with... don't be shy! It's impregnated with a cleaning product and will make your jewellery sparkle quickly and easily after a gentle rub.
With copper you're looking for less of an orange and more of slight shiny pink hue when you've polished it. Silver will be less 'grey' in highlighted areas and you will see the difference, and your pendant come to life.
Do not put in your mouth and keep away from small children.
There are rarely some stones which, when polished and treated are perfectly safe to wear, could be toxic when ingested.
I'm happy to advise on this, but in the interests of safety please don't put jewellery in your mouth and please keep your jewellery away from small children. I can't guarantee its durability in the hands of an enthusiastic baby/toddler/child.
Talk to me
If you keep these pointers in mind, relax, look amazing, and just enjoy the beauty of a unique piece of art made out of something as innocuous as a piece of wire.
There is always an aftercare service and I'm happy to advise, send another cloth and even repair (depending on the damage) on any pieces I've made. Just ask!
